Charging is the most common concern for new and prospective EV buyers. How do I charge? How long does it take? Which charger should I use?
In this beginner's guide, we explain everything you need to know about charging your electric car at home and on the road.
1. AC vs DC Charging
- AC Charging (Slow): Typically used at home or at work. Alternating Current (AC) from the grid is converted to Direct Current (DC) by the car's onboard charger. It takes 5 to 8 hours to fully charge.
- DC Charging (Fast): Public fast charging stations bypass the car's onboard converter and feed Direct Current (DC) directly into the battery pack. It charges from 10% to 80% in 30 to 60 minutes.
2. Charging at Home
Home charging is the most convenient way to keep your EV topped up.
- 15A Wall Socket: You can charge your car using any standard domestic 15A socket. This slow charging method is great for overnight charging.
- AC Wallbox Charger: Typically provided for free with your vehicle purchase, these 7.2 kW or 11 kW chargers charge 2-3 times faster than a standard wall socket.
3. Public Charging Networks in India
When traveling long distances, you will use public charging networks.
- Use mobile apps to find, book, and pay for public fast chargers.
- The standard fast-charging connector used in India is CCS Type 2. Almost every fast-charging station supports this connector.
